Question: Lesbian wedding planner with a client against gay marriage?
(Posted by: The Test Of Time on 2009-07-08 21:57:56)
So I am a wedding planner and I have been working with a bride for a couple months though her wedding isn't for a year from now. I just found out from her online profile that she voted against gay marriage in the past California election. Being a lesbian and in the process of planning my own wedding, this really bothers me. However, I also find this as an opportunity to educate someone on gay rights. I'm not sure what to do. Should I say anything? Any advice? She is a really sweet girl and I am super excited to plan this wedding. It sounds so much fun but I am really offended by her views. I was just reading more on her profile and saw a comment where she says she "obviously hates gays. " I am really upset about this and not sure what to. |

Stay professional. shes a client, if she becomes a friend. then talk to her about it, don't preach. |

Here's the thing... Just as we ask others to be tolerant of homosexuality, we must also be tolerant of homophobic individuals. I do not suggest you say anything because that would kind of cross the business line. You are there to plan her wedding, not to educate her. If you say something and it causes a rift in feelings then she might decide to find another wedding planner. Your choice. |

Just be the best wedding planer you can be! You don't need to address the issue, just show her that you are more then capable at your job. |

Please separate your business from your personal life or get out of business...this is not the place to set up a soap box! Do the job you were hired to do and do it very well. Your private life has nothing to do with the bride, and she did not hire you to educate her about the values of being Gay. This is no different that were you to hire a Wedding Planner for your wedding and he/ she start carping on your marriage! You are not going to like this next part, but here it comes anyway! You are trying to be a professional in a business world. NO business sentence, no business structure starts a sentence off with "so.... " That is very high school...stop it now or it will cost you big time down the road, and sadly, you will never know why! |

Your relationship with this client should remain professional. You should not bring it up at all. In the professional world, we sometimes have to work with people we dont like it. Suck it up the best you can, or refer her to someone else. |

The first answer is right on target. You are in business as a wedding planner and your client's views about same sex marriage or her politics are not your business. If you have a problem with that and can't get through it then the professional thing to do would be to recommend another wedding planner to her. You should just say you are not available. |

-sign- your mixing business, i think you should just confront her saying your gay, and how those comments were hurtful. But you can't really change and educate her, also she can eaisly fire you, cause its just business |

No, you are in a business and should leave the customer alone on what he or she beleives. I beleive in gay rights as much as the next gay person but its not worth it to try and convince her. Just continue planning her wedding like normal. I would hate for you to lose business over this. There will be plenty of time to show the world that we are equal. |
